renewal before possession

SCRIPTURE: Joshua 5:1-9

1: And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
2: At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
3: And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
4: And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
5: Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised…
9: And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: TRUE RENEWAL MAY INVOLVE PRUNING

After Israel crossed the Jordan, they entered the Promised Land, but before they could fully possess it, God paused their progress for renewal. Though they had experienced victory, something deeper was needed: a restoration of covenant identity.

In Joshua 5:1-9, God instructed Joshua to circumcise the new generation of Israelites. This act was not merely physical; it was spiritual; a sign of separation, consecration, and belonging to God. The wilderness generation had neglected this covenant practice, and now God was calling His people back to alignment. The Lord instructed Joshua: “Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise the children of Israel again…” (v. 2).

Circumcision was the covenant sign given to Abraham (Genesis 17). This act restored Israel’s identity as God’s chosen people.

After the circumcision, God declared in verse 9: “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” This marked a turning point. The shame, bondage mindset, and identity of slavery were removed. Israel was no longer defined by their past, but by God’s promise.

Old identities, failures, and limitations are rolled away when you yield to God’s refining process. Crossing into a new season does not eliminate the need for inner transformation. God is more concerned with who you are becoming than where you are going. Circumcision is painful, yet necessary, because true renewal may involve pruning.

ASSIGNMENT
