The Shepherd Who Gave His Life For His Sheep

SCRIPTURE: John 10:14-21

14: I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15: As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16: And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
17: Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18: No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father……
21: Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: THE GOOD SHEPHERD DOES NOT ABANDON HIS SHEEP

Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and willingly gave His life for them. His love is not merely expressed in words but demonstrated through sacrifice. He came to save, gather and lead His people into the security of God’s care. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep personally, just as He knows the Father (vv. 14–15). This reminds us that we are not forgotten or unknown to God. Jesus understands our struggles, weaknesses and needs.

More importantly, Jesus says, “I lay down my life for the sheep” (v. 15). His death was voluntary and purposeful. He was not forced to surrender His life; He willingly gave it for our salvation.

Jesus also speaks of “other sheep” that He must bring into the fold (v. 16). His mission is to gather people from every nation into one flock under one Shepherd. As His followers, we are called to participate in this mission by sharing His love and bringing others to Him.

The Good Shepherd does not abandon His sheep. He knows us, loves us, leads us and gave His life for us. Let us trust Him completely and faithfully follow His voice. Because Christ gave Himself for us, our response should be to know Him, trust Him, obey His voice and follow Him faithfully. We belong to the One who purchased us with His precious blood.
