Obeying God When It Hurts

SCRIPTURE: Genesis 21:8-13

8: And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9: And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
10: Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
11: And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son…
13: And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: OBEDIENCE MAY SOMETIMES BE PAINFUL

Obedience to God is not always easy. Sometimes God may ask us to do something that challenges our emotions, relationships, comfort, or personal desires. In Genesis 21:8–13, Abraham faced a painful situation. Ishmael, his son through Hagar, was mocking Isaac. Sarah demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away. Abraham was greatly distressed because Ishmael was also his son. Yet God gave Abraham a clear instruction: “Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman…” (v. 12). God was asking Abraham to do something painful because He had a greater purpose concerning Isaac and the covenant. The lesson is clear: When God’s instruction is difficult, obedience is still the right response.

God’s purpose is greater than our emotions, Abraham’s emotions told him one thing, but God’s instruction gave him another direction. God knew what Abraham could not fully see. He understood the future and knew that His covenant purpose had to be preserved.

There are moments when we must say: “Lord, I may not understand everything You are doing, but I trust You.” Proverbs 3:5 says: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Abraham had to release Ishmael, but God had a plan for Ishmael. Sometimes we struggle to obey because we think, “What will happen if I let go?” But when God asks you to release something, trust and obey. Remember, whatever God asks you to surrender is never greater than what He has in store for you.
