Remember God's Judgment
SCRIPTURE: Jude 1:5-10
5: I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed them that believed not.
6: And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
7: Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire…
10: But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: REMEMBERING GOD’S JUDGMENT SHOULD MAKE US LIVE SOBERLY
Jude reminds believers of examples from the past where God judged rebellion and disobedience. He refers to the Israelites who were delivered from Egypt but later perished because of unbelief, angels who abandoned their proper place, and the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. These examples teach us that God’s grace does not give us permission to live in disobedience. God is loving and merciful, but He is also holy and just.
The Israelites experienced God’s mighty deliverance, yet many failed to continue in faith and obedience. Their experience warns us that receiving God’s blessings is not a substitute for remaining faithful to Him. Jude also warns against those who reject God’s authority and live according to their sinful desires.
Remembering God’s judgment should not make us live in fear; rather, it should produce reverence, obedience, and holy living. We must therefore examine our lives continually. It is possible to experience God’s goodness and yet become careless in our relationship with Him. God’s judgment reminds us to take sin seriously and remain faithful to the end.
The examples in Jude 5–10 remind us that God’s grace should lead us to obedience, not presumption. Let us learn from the past, take God’s Word seriously, reject rebellion, and remain faithful to Christ.
May we never forget that the God who saves is also the God who judges.
