Brief History of Lagos Presbyterian Church Women's Guild (WG)
Foundations of Faith and Fellowship (1963 - 1969)
The Women’s Guild of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba developed as one of the most vibrant societies within the congregation, reflecting the long-standing Presbyterian tradition of organized women’s ministry within the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria. Following the establishment of the Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba on 5 May 1963, women of the congregation began meeting informally for prayer, fellowship, and support of church activities.
These gatherings were formally organized into the Women’s Guild in the mid-1960s, creating a structured body through which women could contribute to the spiritual and material development of the church.
Early leaders—primarily wives of elders and committed female members of the congregation—played a critical role in organizing weekly fellowship meetings, Bible study sessions, and fundraising efforts that supported the young parish during its formative years. Their dedication helped establish the guild as a central pillar of congregational life.
Institutional Expansion and Compassionate Outreach (1970s – 1980s)
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Women’s Guild became deeply involved in the expansion and institutional development of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba. Under the leadership of successive guild presidents and senior women of the congregation, the organization spearheaded fundraising initiatives for church building projects, contributed significantly to welfare programs, and supported evangelistic outreach across Lagos.
Members of the guild also organized visitation teams that provided care for the sick, assistance for needy families, and encouragement for new members of the church. In addition, the guild actively participated in presbytery-level women’s conferences within the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, strengthening links between Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba and other Presbyterian congregations across the country.
Through these efforts, the guild helped foster unity, compassion, and disciplined Christian service among the women of the church.
Mentorship, Leadership, and Lasting Legacy (1990s – Present)
From the 1990s to the present, the Women’s Guild has continued to play a vital role in the spiritual and social life of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba. The organization expanded its activities to include leadership training for women, family-life seminars, and mentorship programs for younger female members of the congregation.
Guild members have remained actively involved in supporting church missions, organizing charitable outreach within the Yaba community, and contributing financially to major church projects and anniversary celebrations. Through decades of service, the Women’s Guild has helped nurture generations of Presbyterian women who have served the church as teachers, choir leaders, welfare coordinators, and community advocates.
Today the guild remains a cornerstone of the church’s ministry, embodying the Presbyterian ideals of faith, service, and communal responsibility that have shaped the life of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba since its founding in 1963.
