Brief History of Lagos Presbyterian Church Men's Christian Association (MCA)
Foundations and the Formative Years (The 1960s)
The Men’s Christian Association of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba emerged as part of the broader tradition of men’s fellowship within the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, which encourages male members of the church to participate actively in spiritual growth, leadership, and service to the congregation. The association in Yaba was organized in the mid-1960s, only a few years after the establishment of the Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba in 1963.
Its formation reflected the Presbyterian emphasis on structured church societies that support evangelism, discipline, and communal responsibility. Early members included founding elders and lay leaders of the church who recognized the need to mobilize men for prayer, moral leadership, and practical service within the congregation.
In its formative years, the association organized regular fellowship meetings, Bible studies, and community outreach programs, laying the foundation for a strong and enduring men’s ministry within the parish.
Growth, Infrastructure, and Stewardship (1970s – 1980s)
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Men’s Christian Association grew in both membership and influence within the church. Several notable elders and lay leaders helped strengthen the organization by promoting discipline, financial stewardship, and participation in church development projects.
Members of the association contributed significantly to the expansion of church infrastructure, including fundraising efforts for building projects and supporting evangelistic outreach in Lagos and neighboring communities.
Leaders of the association encouraged men of the congregation to take active roles as elders, deacons, and committee members, thereby strengthening the governance structure of the church in accordance with Presbyterian tradition. Through these activities, the association became one of the pillars of congregational life at Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba
Modern Evolution, Mentorship, and Contemporary Impact (1990s – Present)
In the 1990s and early twenty-first century, the Men’s Christian Association continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of the church and society. The association expanded its programs to include leadership seminars, family counseling initiatives, and mentorship programs for younger male members of the congregation.
It also participated actively in presbytery-wide and national gatherings of the Men’s Christian Association within the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, fostering unity among Presbyterian men across different congregations.
Today, the association remains an important arm of Lagos Presbyterian Church Yaba, contributing to evangelism, church administration, and community service while continuing the long Presbyterian tradition of disciplined Christian fellowship among men.
